Want to stay away from Vista

Found a nice little explanation on how to stay away from Vista and stick with XP.  It’s time to downgrade. 

To the vast bulk of users, though, “downgrade” is a synonym for reverting to an older version. In that case, it simply means dumping Vista and returning to XP

Also, this is a funny writeup on the problems of outlook 2007.

They hate us – OK, this one might be pushing it, but I’m running out of explanations here. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not Microsoft bashers here. Both our products are developed on Microsoft’s .NET platform and we’ve been a fan of their development environment for the better part of a decade. But seriously, they’ve taken 5 important years off the email design community in one fell swoop.

And finally, 65 reasons that outlook sucks.

Sometimes I see the orange bubble, then it disappears quickly – but not so quick that I didn’t notice it!

Sometimes, a vertical scrollbar appears in a message / preview pane, when there’s no ability to scroll up or down.

Don’t forget to think about conversion rates

It’s easy to focus on getting visitors to your site and ignore what they actually do when they get there.  A thousand visitors and no sales is less desirable than 10 visitors and 5 sales. 

Think about a few things if your website is experiencing these problems:

  • is optimization getting in the way?

Meaning…have you focused too much on what search engines want and not enough on what your customers want?  This is a common mistake by those who try SEO on their own or who hire SEO people with little business knowledge. 

  • Do you know your customers?

Meaning…do you have a firm grasp on what your customers are looking for and what type of shoppers they are?  What do they expect?  Are you meeting these expectations?  Can you change those expectations?

  • how confusing is your site?

Do you have a call to action?  Does your site view properly in all browsers and in all resolution sizes?  We find that 40-50% of visitors to our sites still use IE 6…so design for this. 

  • are you actually selling your product on the site

Now, I don’t mean selling in a sense of is it available to buy.  I mean are you selling the positives of your products and addressing the concerns that your buyers may have?  The visitors to your site may not be as knowledgeable as you think or maybe they are much more knowledgeable than you think.  Get to know them.

How Fast can you Respond?

In today’s market, (today’s market?  did I just write that?) your prospective customers and I guess actual customers want answers…right away.  Many online businesses have contact forms or application forms..this is very common in the mortgage industry.  We have them on one of our sites

Now, the problem is how soon can a brick and mortar business respond to their online queries before they lose that customer to someone else? 

We try to respond as fast as possible to anyone who contacts us…sometimes it can be within a minute of receiving the email.  5 out of 10 times, the customer will write back “thanks for contacting me so soon”, you have immediately built a relationship with them and this will probably give you a better chance of getting their business.
